Frequently Asked Questions

  • Some insurance plans in Canada cover sessions with a Certified Canadian Counsellor, but not all. The best way to know is to check directly with your provider about your specific plan.

If you do have coverage, you’ll typically pay for your session up front and then submit your receipt to your provider for reimbursement.

  • I accept e-transfer, debit, and credit card for session payments.

  • Many clients feel some relief after their very first session. Talking to a supportive, non-judgmental therapist can ease the weight you’ve been carrying, even if the deeper work takes more time.

Lasting change depends on what brings you to therapy. For some, 5–12 sessions is enough. For others, the process takes longer.

In our first session, we’ll set goals together so you have a clear sense of where you’d like therapy to go and how it can best support you.

  • Many people come to Greenfield Counselling when life stops feeling like their own. That might look like anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, or burnout. For others, it’s navigating transitions — a career change, a breakup, the loss of faith, becoming a parent, or the feeling that the roadmap they were following no longer makes sense.

We also work with identity and spirituality concerns, self-esteem, and the unique pressures of farm and rural life. Whatever has you feeling disconnected, stuck, or unsure, this is a space to sort it through.

  • Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. We use different approaches depending on what’s helpful for you:

    • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT): for identifying unhelpful thought loops and building practical tools to shift them.

    • Narrative Therapy: to reframe the stories you’ve been carrying, especially the ones that feel limiting.

    • Existential Psychotherapy: to explore meaning, purpose, and direction when old anchors no longer hold.

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): to make peace with what can’t be controlled while moving toward what matters.

    • Solution-Focused Therapy: to build on what’s already working and create small steps forward.

The real work is not in any single model, but in how we use them together to fit your life.

  • You don’t need to wait until you “hit rock bottom” to ask for help. If you’re feeling stuck, quietly disappointed, disconnected, overwhelmed, or like you’re just going through the motions, that’s enough reason. Therapy is for anyone who wants more clarity, more direction, or simply a steadier space to figure out what’s next.

  • I offer flexible options to fit different schedules. Most sessions take place during the day on weekdays, with limited evening and weekend spots available. If you need a specific time, it’s best to book a few weeks in advance to secure your preferred slot.

  • I provide online counselling from Southern Alberta, offering virtual therapy sessions to clients across the province and throughout western Canada. Whether you live in a rural community or a busy city, you can access therapy with me from the comfort of your own space.

  • Online therapy is simply counselling that happens through a secure video platform instead of in person. You meet with your therapist from home, your office, or wherever you have privacy.

In Canada, online therapy works much like a traditional session: you book an appointment, log in at your scheduled time, and have a one-on-one conversation with your therapist. Everything you share is private and confidential, just as it would be in a physical office.

The benefit is access. Whether you live in a big city or a rural farming community, you don’t have to drive hours, sit in traffic, or rearrange your whole day. You just sign in and start talking.

At Greenfield Counselling, online therapy is designed to meet you where you are. You don’t need to have the perfect words or a clear plan. You just need to show up, and we’ll sort through it together — whether that’s anxiety, burnout, grief, a life transition, or the quiet sense that you’ve lost yourself along the way.

  • Greenfield Counselling is set up primarily for secure video sessions — that way we can see each other, which often makes the work feel more connected and personal.

That said, if video isn’t possible for you because of internet issues, privacy at home, or comfort level, phone sessions can be arranged. The most important thing is that you have a private space where you can speak openly.

Whether by phone or video, the process is the same: you book through our Jane App link, and at your appointment time, you connect with Matt for your session. Everything you share remains private and confidential.

  • Sessions are collaborative. You don’t have to show up with the right words or a polished story. We’ll work together to explore what you’ve been carrying and what’s getting in the way. Some sessions might focus on practical tools (like CBT), while others might explore meaning and direction (existential or narrative work). The pace and the focus are guided by you.

  • It depends on your needs. Some people come for a few sessions to get support during a transition. Others stay longer to unpack deeper patterns or life-long struggles. We’ll talk about what feels realistic for you and revisit as you go.

  • That’s completely normal. Many people come in unsure where to start. Therapy isn’t about performing or having the “right” story. It’s about showing up as you are. Even silence has a place here.

  • Friends care deeply, but therapy offers a different kind of space. Here, you won’t be judged, given quick advice, or asked to “look on the bright side.” Instead, you’ll get structured support, evidence-based tools, and the chance to explore meaning and change at your own pace.

  • Yes. With lived experience in farming and rural life, we understand the pressures of isolation, unpredictable work, family dynamics, and the culture of “just push through.” We offer a non-clinical, respectful approach that speaks to those realities.

  • You can click here to book a session and you’ll be taken to our Jane App booking system, where you can choose a time that works best for you.
